Experimental Study on Shape Retrieval Using QPIAL

An experimental investigation on shape retrieval using Quadratic Polynomial Interpolation of Adjacent Landmarks (QPIAL), a newly proposed shape refinement method [1], is carried. Shape representation is a fundamental issue in the process of shape retrieval, a category of Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR). Many shape representations and shape refinement methods have been proposed. Fourier Descriptors (FD) and Curvature Scale Space Descriptors (CSSD) are widely adopted contour-based shape descriptors for shape retrieval [2]. Among the shape refinement methods, QPIAL outperforms the others [Kubota]. In this project, QPIAL is used before extracting the Fourier Descriptors. Fourier descriptors are chosen because of its simplicity and compactness. To observe the effect of shape refinement using QPIAL, a shape retrieval system using Fourier descriptors is implemented with and without refinement. To investigate the implementation, SQUID database [3] is used. Results show that the query using QPIAL retrieves more similar shapes than the query with out refinement.
